Workshops & Trainings for Nurses
Improving Interpersonal Relationship Skills
California 8 hours CEU

How do you talk and listen to your patients? Are they hearing what you say or are they nodding just to be polite? Why is it that you can communicate easily and effectively with some patients and not with others? Are you only getting "Yes" or "No" answers? Some have blamed this on differences due to "cultural and ethnic" diversity.

However, many of these issues can be resolved by understanding individual communication styles. Carolyn Kalil, the seminar leader and educator, is author of the best selling book, "Follow Your True Colors to the Work You Love." Using this book as the text, Ms. Kalil takes the participants through the practice of different personality types and their communication styles. The goal of this training is for the attendees to use their unique skills and talents effectively in their current career while learning to communicate with patients.

Differing communication styles can result in poor patient care when each person is not understood. When you are heard and understood by a patient, your work becomes easier. This training transcends cultural and ethnic diversity because it focuses on the basics of individual differences, found in all cultures. Different listening styles and different communication styles among the groups are practiced and mastered, leading to better patient communication.

This training covers one day for 8 CE contact hours. The lectures include PowerPoint slides and a textbook is provided. The individual and group activities are based on applied adult learning theory.

At the conclusion of the training, each participant will understand and master communication styles for dealing with diverse patients, regardless of culture or ethnic background.
